As part of the Make Merton Merry project, our Year 10 GCSE Art students have had the opportunity to work with a visiting artist. Make Merton Merry is a yearlong project funded by Merton Council to connect local artists with schools and businesses in the area to work together to create displays to be exhibited around the London Borough of Merton. All of the Artists collaborating on the project have experience of working with schools and in the community. Most either live, work or study in the area and each have their own creative specialisms bringing their individual techniques and expertise to the project.
Last week, the GCSE Art pupils worked with the artist, Dickie Wilkinson (AKA The Artist Dickie W), who came up with the idea of connecting artists with local schools and to display the work in local businesses to help encourage people to visit their local high streets and engender a sense of civic pride. This was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to work with a practising artist where they learnt about his work and the materials, processes and techniques he uses before creating work of their own.
This work will soon be exhibited at a venue (to be confirmed) in the heart of Wimbledon.
