The College has eighteen governors. Although from many different backgrounds, we are all women and men from the local community who have volunteered to offer our knowledge, professional skills, and experience because we share the common desire to ensure the best education for the boys who attend the College.
What We Do
We appoint a Headteacher and Deputies with the skills, ability, insight and vision to successfully manage and run the school and we work with him to ensure that the College has clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
We hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff. We also oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure money is well spent.
We also have a responsibility to ensure; the best possible outcomes for our pupils, the highest possible quality of teaching, learning and assessment, and to successfully promote the personal development of the boys taught in the College and to ensure that they are safeguarded.
Our Meetings
We meet together as a "Board of Governors" once at the beginning of each school year to elect a Chair and Vice-Chair, set up committees, appoint designated governors for the year and, most importantly of all, review the schools examination results and plans for the coming session.
We meet again as a "Board" at the end of each term. We consider detailed reports from each of our three standing committees, the Head Master and designated governors. We also discuss and decide on a range of other policies on how the College should be improved and we discuss and approve the School Development Plan in order to address areas where a detailed self-evaluation the College by the Headteacher and governors has shown that improvements might be made.
How We Became Governors
We have become governors of the college in different ways. Two governors are elected by parents, one is elected by staff, 1 is a Co-opted governor (appointed by the board), another is nominated by the Local Authority, the Headteacher becomes a governor when appointed and eight are appointed by the Trustees of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, who founded the College in 1892.
