Sixth Form
A level Psychology offers an engaging and effective introduction to the main Psychological theories and research. Students will learn the fundamentals of the subject and develop skills valued by Higher Education (HE) and employers, including critical analysis, independent thinking and research.
Poetry Term 1
- Cognitive Psychology (memory):
- Looking at how the brain processes information, eyewitness testimony, memory improvement.
- Developmental Psychology (attachments): Looking at the importance of childhood experiences in long-term mental health.
- Research Methods: How psychological research is planned, carried out and analysed.
Poetry Term 2
- Physiological Psychology (stress): The effect of stress on the body, causes of stress and stress management techniques.
- Social Psychology (social influence): How people’s behaviour is influenced or not influenced by others; conformity, obedience, independent behaviour and how social change takes place.
- Individual differences (abnormality): How mental illness develops and how it is treated with medication and psychological therapies.
Rhetoric Term 1
- Relationships: Romantic relationships, human reproductive behaviour and the effects of early life experiences and culture on relationships
- Aggression: Social, biological and evolutionary explanations of aggression.
- Gender: Biological, psychological and social influences on gender development (how we develop our ideas of our gender and masculinity/femininity)
Rhetoric Term 2
- The psychology of addictive behaviour: The initiation, maintenance and treatment of addictions (gambling, smoking, internet, phone use, media addictions)
- Depression: Biological and psychological explanations for depression with psychological and biological treatments.
- Psychological research and scientific method: How psychological research is designed, implemented, analysed and appraised.
